Joia Ellery
I’m a ceramic artist based in Fremantle/Walyalup, exploring hand-built and wheel-thrown vessels with a focus on carved texture, intentional form, and the spaces they hold. My journey with clay began just a few years ago, but it’s become a medium that feels like home – a way to slow down, ground myself, and create with intention.
I come from a family of creatives and have always been drawn to making – dabbling in everything from painting to photography. Ceramics was something I’d admired from afar, I took a short beginner’s course in throwing and quickly realised it was much harder than it looked. But I loved the process and set up a small studio at my grandma’s house, learning by doing ever since.
Now, my process is more intuitive, leaning toward hand-building – carving each surface and embracing imperfection. I’m inspired by natural textures, botanical forms, and the beauty of everyday rituals. My recent vases are made to be lived with – a place for flowers from the garden, foraged branches, creative arrangements or a moment of stillness in the day.
It’s a quiet kind of work, and it feels like where I’m meant to be.
